HOW VETERANS CAN IMPROVE THEIR CAREER

There are a lot websites out there that advertise jobs, but wouldn’t it be
nice to have a conversation with a REAL person? Wouldn’t it be great to
connect to a recruiter to show them what a great employee you’d be?

Well, The Home Depot has created a brand new community where you can do just
that. The community, named HomeTown, has a specific group to help veterans
during their career search by giving them a place to network and have live
conversations with recruiters.

Within the HomeTown community, veterans can:
• Chat directly with recruiters
• Learn from exclusive articles and free webinars
• Network with other military members and veterans

The Home Depot intends this free community to be your central hub to learn,
grow and enhance your career. Veterans who take advantage of this free
service will most definitely have an advantage when it comes time to
applying and interviewing for their next career.

You can join the HomeTown community at: www.homedepotcommunity.com

ONGOING COMMITMENT

The Home Depot’s support of the nation’s military extends beyond the new
HomeTown community as they offer plenty of resources to veterans. The
company recently launched a new website highlighting this commitment
(www.homedepotmilitary.com) and has offered its free Military Skills
Translator Tool for some time now. The Skills Translator Tool is designed to
help translate and match an applicant’s military skills to positions that
might offer the best career fit.

The company has also partnered with military-focused career fairs and
participates in multiple events throughout the year.

VetJobs, G.I. Jobs magazine and Military Spouse magazine have all named The
Home Depot a top military-friendly employer.

3. Pentagon Outlines Troop Benefits Threatened By Budget Cuts

Military.com reports the military may further cut troop amenities as a
result of budget uncertainty, according to Pentagon officials. Base
commissaries, golf courses, bowling alleys, recreation centers and military
media services such as the Stars and Stripes newspaper, the American Forces

4. Healthcare Options During Transition

The following information comes from Katherine Tracy, MOAA’s Deputy Director
for Healthcare Programs. You’ve made the decision to transition from the
military and may be wondering how this impacts your healthcare benefits. Let’s
take a quick look through two lenses: military retirement eligible or not.

If you’ve not fulfilled the 20 year requirement for a military retirement,
your healthcare ends on your last day of regular active duty service or in
the case of an activated National Guard or reserve member and serving a
period of more than 30 consecutive days of active duty in support of a
contingency operation, on the last day of your transition period known as
Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP) which is 180-days
following your separation date. The TAMP benefit also applies to active duty
service members serving in support of a contingency operation separating due
to:
• stop-loss,
• sole survivorship discharge, or
• agreement to become a member of the Selected Reserve of a Reserve
Component the day immediately following release from regular active duty
service.

Military retiree’s under age 65 can choose between a managed care option
(HMO), known as Tricare Prime, or a fee for service option called Tricare
Standard. The main difference between the two is cost verses choice. Tricare
Prime is least costly; whereas, Tricare Standard offers the greatest choice
in selecting providers. Furthermore, the Tricare Prime option is limited to
those who reside within the catchment area of a Military Treatment Facility
(MTF).

Tricare also comes with a pharmacy benefit delivered through three points of
service listed below in the order of least to greatest out-of-pocket cost to
you.
• Military Treatment Facility,
• Tricare Home Delivery Pharmacy, or
• Tricare Retail Pharmacy.

Next, the Tricare Retiree Dental Plan (TRDP) provides a dental option for
retiree’s as well as gray-area National Guard or reserve members and their
dependents. Timely enrollment, within 120-days of eligibility, ensures the
full range of benefits is available immediately. Otherwise, there’s a
12-month wait-period for crowns, bridges, orthodontics and dentures.

Lastly, once retired, your Tricare catastrophic cap rises to
$3,000.00/family per fiscal year. The catastrophic cap is your maximum
out-of-pocket expense for Tricare covered benefits. Here, the key is Tricare
covered benefits. If in doubt - ask!

This has been a whirl-wind through the healthcare benefit structure. If you
need further guidance or would like to schedule a one-on-one consultation to
discuss your particular situation in more detail, call a MOAA Benefits
Counselor at 1.800.234.6622.

5. Investigation Links Veterans' Deaths with Delays at VA Hospitals

Long waits and delayed care at VA hospitals are contributing to veterans'
deaths, according to an investigation by CNN. The Veterans Affairs
Department is aware of the problems but has done little to rectify them,
according to the report, which cites William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical
Center in Columbia, S.C., as having an especially high death toll due to
delays. Six deaths tied to delays at Dorn have been confirmed by the VA, but
sources say the number could be more than 20

6. Corporate Trainers Needed to Fill the "Skills Gap" in the US

A recent study by Accenture shows that US executives believe there is a
skill shortage in America and that they won't have the necessary skills in
place in their businesses in the next 1 to 2 years. The survey revealed that
72% of executives identified training as one of the top ways for employees
to develop new skills and that 51% of respondents plan to increase their
training and development programs over the next 2 years.

7. SBA to Offer No-Upfront-Fee Loans to Veterans

The U.S. Small Business Administration has announced a new zero-upfront-fee
loan program designed to help more veterans start or expand businesses.
Starting January 1, veterans taking out SBA loans of up to $350,000 will pay
no upfront fee until the end of the fiscal year. Loans between $150,000 and
$350,000 typically require upfront payments anywhere between 2.25% and
4.75%. Fees for SBA loans of less than $150,000 are currently set to zero.

8. National Guard (in Federal Status) and Reserve Activated as of November
20, 2013

The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and
Army Reserve is 32,650; Navy Reserve, 4,138; Marine Corps Reserve, 1,993;
Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 7,457; and the Coast Guard
Reserve, 376. This brings the total National Guard and reserve personnel who
have been activated to 46,614, including both units and individual
augmentees.
